Anniversary, poop, gratitude, and a cannoli
This week marks my one-year anniversary as a weekly columnist for In The Powder Room.
It all started with a simple little post about the true love I feel for my minivan, in which I first publicly muttered the words "you are dead to me, bitch."
Ah, memories.
Submitting that first post was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my professional life. I distinctly recall having to explain to my new (to me) British editor that the term "sweater puppets" was a euphemism for breasts and yes, Americans would think it's funny.
Or some of them would, anyway. (I hoped.) I was introduced to a lovely new American mom blogger last week who just so happens to have an actual tutorial on her blog for how to make ... wait for it ... sweater puppets. Yep, real puppets-upcycled from the sleeves of an old sweater. But even she thought the term was funny when I told her it was a euphemism for boobs. (Phew.)
So to answer your question, yes, there is clearly something wrong with me.
As if this quiz I wrote about going camping doesn't confirm it. That's one of my most favorite (but least read) posts, by the way.
Another of my favorites was my horrifically graphic childbirth tale, A full-circle sausage moment.
And speaking of poop, I seem to have a knack for working that word into just about any post. Like this one about my social anxiety in the preschool pick-up line. That was the post where I coined the bad-day-phrase "a poop on her tampon string kind of day."
Damn, that post made me feel so vulnerable that I had to write it in the third person. And yet, other posts about things like depression, alcoholism, and getting my aging body "swimsuit ready" were much easier to pen. Huh. Go figure.
Anyhooo.
It's been a wonderful year and I'm so grateful for the opportunities and growth I've experienced through my affiliation with this wonderful cyber-home-away-from-home. My column at In The Powder Room was my first paying job as a writer and that was such a gift to me, both professionally and spiritually. I am filled with gratitude for the leadership team here who embraced me and made me feel like there was a place in this world for an irreverent gal like me.
And now that I'm the Editor-in-Chief, I get to give that same gift to other humorists I adore.
We've got a whole new crop of wonderful writers who have joined (or rejoined) our team over the past few months. I hope you are enjoying Kim, Allison, TheNDM, Lerner, and HouseTalkN as much as I do. Glen and Janie are still here consistently producing excellent content every week too, as they have been since long before I arrived. For the full line-up of our current regular contributors, click here.
We also have a wonderful series happening on the blog called "60 seconds in the stalls." It's a great place to get to know some of your favorite ITPR writers a little better and find out what really makes them tick. We'll be posting new interviews over the next few weeks, so make sure you pop in at the blog and check it out from time to time. That's also where we announce things like our WeShop Product of the Week and any giveaways we do from time to time.
Last but certainly not least, I am grateful to you, the readers, for coming to read my posts and comment and make this such a fun place to hang out week after week. You are the cream in my cannoli. And I totally do not mean that in a dirty way.
Kidding. Of course it's dirty. {wink wink}

Congrats on a year's worth of greatness that just happens to include poop (also inappropriate references to tampon strings that don't know their place, boobs, and all things vagina). Is it wrong that I'd like your sweater puppets to, um, warm up my hands?Reply -

Happy Anniversary! You already know this because I already told you, but I'll say it again, anyway: You're doing great things here. And thanks for giving me the chance to be featured at ITPR. I promise to write more when I have some free time (puha!) and my weekends aren't monopolized by, say, 11th hour house guests in the form of my parents and two toddler nephews (for hypothetical example). (It was a lovely visit.) (No, really - it was!)Reply -

If it wasn't for you getting this opportunity, I wouldn't have found the awesomeness of this place, and clearly wouldn't have had the opportunities here that you personally have given me. Happy anniversary, my dear! I adore being the cream in your cannoli, for you are the chip in my muffin.Reply -
