Three generations of butts

Comments (55) by Janie Emaus October 04, 2012 - 6:02 AM

Skin wrinkles. Hair whitens. Butts droop. Aging is not a pretty picture, is it?

And it's even less pretty when you're in a dressing room with all those mirrors that don't hide anything. Rather, they emphasize all those parts of your body which you'd like to imagine looked differently.

But those mirrors don't lie.

I was faced with that painful truth the other day when I went shopping with my mother and my daughter. Three generations of women made from the same mold.

The similarities were still there, but the differences were hard to ignore.

Years ago, my butt was as firm and ripe as a melon, just like my daughter's. My thighs were smooth, void of those craters and bumps, resembling the moon surface. My arms didn't have that flabby effect. My hair was a natural blonde.

After looking from my daughter to myself, I wanted to bolt out of that room. In fact, I wanted to bolt out of 2012 and into 1990.

Then I looked at my mom. And felt even worse.

I saw where my body was going!

And I'm not convinced that any amount of exercise can stop it from happening.  (Although, I don't think I'll ever wear those old lady under panties).

While I was lamenting the state of my future body, my daughter blurted out.  "Ugh, I hate my waist."

Me: "Your waist is perfect. Look at this extra skin around mine."

My mother:  "What are you two talking about? I'm one big wrinkle. My butt is flatter than melted butter. And my boobs are like bananas."

With that, we all started laughing. There was no age difference in our giggles. Just three happy women, trying to find a decent pair of jeans that hugged our bodies in just the right way. No matter what that body looked like.

And we were determined to succeed.

No buts about it.

The world of the http://www.best-unlocked-phones.com/ best sim free mobile phone deals is a confusing one these days, particularly for those wondering how to start a http://www.best-unlocked-phones.com/ unlocked sim free mobile phones business.Few things are perhaps as confusing as GSM frequencies and GSM http://www.best-unlocked-phones.com/ sony ericsson sim free unlocked mobile phonesthat seem to work in some parts of the world but not in others.Multiple band http://www.best-unlocked-phones.com/ sim free unlocked mobile phones ireland and GSM frequencies can be especially confusing for anyone wondering how to start a cell phone business.

My mom is 92 so I know where I'm headed. The good thing is without my glasses I can't see all the wrinkles in the mirror. And don't knock the granny panties. There's a reason we wear them. Jody, The Medicare Mom

I take my mom shopping for clothes and undies and I am resigned, at long last, to knowing that she is wearing the body I will soon have. I see mine looking more and more like hers every year. I guess, dang it, that's just life. But on the up side, we're both in really good health and she is nearly 90 and I am nearly 63.

Hey Janie, I just love this, and your mom. Those mirrors do lie and the lighting is pure shit. You know, last week Lerner brought up the whole skinny jean issue and I did look into it. It aggrevates me that my husband can go in any store and buy a pair of jeans, in his size, always. I admit I did not do allot of research, but there were 12 different styles and cuts before we even start size negotiations! WTH! I still miss my old Levi's, and I am glad y'all had fun.

Are you sure the mirrors don't lie?? If the stores were smart they would create mirrors that distorted the truth in favor of all women. Sounds like you had one of those memorable moments. Lucky you!!

This was a really cute post. My mother passed away in 2008, but I watched her body age and see similarities in my face and arms and legs. Then I look at my 13-year-old daughter who's complaining about her muffin-top and I want to laugh. Some days I look in the mirror and wonder, "what the heck? how did THAT get there on my face?"

Cute, Janie--but aging is part of life. Do I wish I looked like I did in my 20s? Sure. But I'm just trying now to keep my older self as healthy, and as good-looking for my age, as possible.
